Rothbaum et al. have developed an innovative method for computerized behavior therapy that uses virtual reality technology for graded exposure to feared stimuli. A clinician guides the patient in using a virtual reality computer
program to experience a hierarchy of increasing heights (such as ascending an elevator).
In a study of 17 subjects with height phobia, the virtual reality program was found to
be superior to a waiting-list control group. Patients appeared to accept exposure with
virtual reality, and no adverse effects were reported.
